The southern state of Mississippi borders the eastern banks of the Mississippi river and is famous for history, culture and forests. With its mild year-round climate and plenty of captivating outdoor activities like fishing and canoeing, I can’t miss this destination for my next vacation.
The Best Vacation Spots in Mississippi
One reason why I visit Mississippi is the chance to uncover its heritage and Southern beauty. The following places make up my to-do list when on vacation at this destination.
Gulfport: I can’t end a vacation in Mississippi without soaking up some sun, and Gulfport is the perfect spot. Situated on the Gulf of Mexico, this city is the perfect location for its long beaches and Ship Island. Here, I wander leisurely as I marvel at the Jones Park with its magnificent waterfront promenade, or later go boating in the open water to experience sharks and dolphins. If I travel with my kids, I will make a stop at the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center for them to experience the scientific displays.
Hattiesburg: This destination has numerous activities for fun and leisure. For instance, I’ll take a stroll through the zoo for a closer view of the exotic animals before relaxing with my favorite wine on the patio of Southern Prohibition Brewing. Next stop will be at Pep’s Point Water Park for a wild bath before delving into history at any of the museums around here.
Natchez: This quaint location buzzing with history is the reason I like escaping to the banks of Mississippi. It’s always refreshing exploring the gardens and browsing historic buildings at the Natchez National Historical Park. The three ceremonial mounds laid by the native people in the Grand Village of Natchez are a perfect site to stop as I will know the origin of the name of this city. If you are an outsider, you check if there are any Historic Hotels in America where you can stay!
Jackson: As the capital of Mississippi, Jackson makes for the best stop when I land as it beams with an array of attractions. From the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science to the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and the Jackson Zoo, I can never go wrong with a getaway in Jackson.
Canton: As a festival buff, a visit to Canton is a must. December is my preferred stop to experience the Christmas Festival, but I also like visiting in July to participate in the Mississippi Championship Hot Air Balloon Race. For my art enthusiasm, I visit in May or October to browse the Canton Multicultural Center and Museum, or enjoy the Canton Flea Market Arts.
Things to Do on My Weekend Getaway in Mississippi
Famous for its numerous outdoor opportunities, I always look forward to visiting Mississippi and experiencing its numerous lakes and rivers, diverse wildlife and terrain and the alluring beauty. This is my to-do list when I visit Mississippi.
Fishing: Whether I want to venture into saltwater of freshwater fishing, this destination has something to satiate my angling craves. I will take a guided tour and explore the best fishing spots around the local reefs and wrecks. My desire will be to winch up amberjack, cobia or some red snapper. I also hope to winch up some redfish, speckled trout and flounder as I walk along the marshes.
Biking: As a cycling enthusiast, Mississippi has hidden gems in its bike trails that I will explore on my getaway. I can’t wait to grab my bike and pedal down the Columbus Riverwalk, meander through the hardwoods as I enjoy the spectacular views of views of the rivers and fields. Alternatively, I can opt to experience the well-lit, smooth and wide Longleaf trace. This trail is common with skaters particularly between Prentiss and Hattiesburg.
Birding: The destination’s Gulf Coast hosts different species of birds to meet my birding needs. I will purposefully visit in the spring or fall to spot migrating species through the vibrant coastal environment such as brown pelicans, surf scoter and the Mississippi kite. The most famous birding spots are found at the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve.
Canoeing: With numerous canoeing and kayaking spots, The Mississippi River offers the best opportunity to explore the azure waters. As a beginner, I will need a guide to help me put my paddling abilities to test as I explore the aquatic flora and fauna. Popular launching points include Bear Creek, Leaf River, Black Creek and Chunky River.
